Turkey has set up its biggest overseas military base in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, increasing Turkish presence in the Horn of Africa country. Officially opened on Saturday, the base, which reportedly cost $50m, will train 10,000 Somali troops and has the capacity to train at least 1,500 soldiers at a time, according to Turkish and Somali officials. Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague opened a new British embassy in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu on Thursday. This is the first time the UK has had one in Somalia since 1991. The UK is also the first European Union country to reopen an embassy in the country since the Somali Federal Government was established last year.

A suicide bomb attack in Somalia's capital Mogadishu has killed at least a dozen people. The Al-Shabaab Islamic group attacked the Nasa-hablod hotel, telling police that "apostate members of the government" were visiting it. After the explosion its fighters stormed the hotel and shot at people inside the building. Security forces then overwhelmed them in a gunbattle. Two bomb attacks in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, have killed at least 20 people. Police say people are still trapped under the rubble of a hotel, and they fear the death toll could rise. The first explosion was a massive truck bomb that targeted an area with government offices, hotels and restaurants. About two hours later, a car bomb detonated in the city's Madina district. CNN reports that the State Department has made a request that all non-essential US citizen employees vacate the Somali capital of Mogadishu in light of a "specific threat information against U.S. personnel on the Mogadishu International Airport." "The security situation in Somalia is extremely unstable, and the threat to all U.S. citizens in Somalia remains critical." A state department official confirms that in October at least 300 people were confirmed dead resulting from a double car bombing in Mogadishu. The attack was deemed the deadliest attack in Somalia's modern history.
